ADVENTURE RIDES 2020

I had a friend from Kitchener join the Adventure Ride to Dunnville.  She loved it.  In particular the folks who were on the ride.  She said "what a great group".  Folks who were there to enjoy the ride together, great camaraderie. - Anne Beales
These rides are fun and social, focusing on exploring routes we don't normally ride and stopping in the middle for an extended food break.  The goal is to meet new people and look around at the scenery rather then getting to our destination as fast as we can.

Things to know:
  • All speeds are welcome and YES you can bring friends who don't normally ride with the Cycling Centre.  Everyone usually finds someone to ride with as we split into different groups as the ride starts.  Nervous about being alone?  Convince a friend to join you!  The more the merrier.
  • These rides are not marked, riders are responsible for printing their own cue sheets from the PDFs below or uploading the route to your computer from the links below.
  • Click here for directions on how to upload route from RidewithGPS to your Garmin or Wahoo.

We have been in withdrawal due to mass start events being cancelled because of Covid-19, so we thought it would be fun to create a fun event that everyone can do from anywhere with a mix of speed and skill challenges.  Here are the details:
  • There are 5 stages:
    • 1 km starting at 0 km/hr - Flat-ish route like this example
    • 5 km starting at 0 km/hr - Flat-ish route like this example
    • 1 km hill with 30 m minimum elevation starting at 0 km/hr like this one or Strava

    • Fastest flat tire change
  • You can do these on your own or with a group
  • Choose any safe location for your segments
  • Challenges must be performed on Aug. 28, 29, or 30 and can be submitted in any order
  • Submit Garmin or Strava files (only the distance asked) for the distance challenge, and video of the skill challenge to Petrina.  Screen shots or links are good.
  • Participants will be ranked based on speed of each task.  The fastest will be awarded 1 point, 2nd fastest 2 points, etc. Rider with the least points after 5 stages will be declared the winner.

Due to Covid-19 we will not be doing big group rides this summer; however, a summer wouldn't feel complete without an Adventure Ride!  So we thought it would be fun to do a Scavenger Hunt.  You can participate as a solo rider or a group of riders, and you can join in from anywhere in the world with riders of all ages!  This is how it works:

  • At least one person from every group will need WhatsApp on their cell phone.
  • Create a group in WhatsApp that includes Petrina (416-458-6859).
  • Let Petrina know you'll be participating by Sunday Aug. 2.
  • On Monday, August 3 at 9 am EST the WhatsApp groups will receive a message with a list of 50 things.   When you find an item on the list you take a picture and send it to your WhatsApp group that includes Petrina who will keep track of who has found what.  Items do not need to be sent in order.
  • The group that has found the most items by 12 pm EST will be declared the winner.  Ties will be broken by creativity.
  • You can choose any starting point in the world and groups can be any size, all ages, and all abilites; however, groups will need to stay together during the hunt.
  • The ride will be postponed if the forecast calls for rain in Oakville, ON with groups being notified on August 2.
